Laboratory of Avian Ecology

group of geoinformation systems

The main research trends – investigations of global changes in ecosystems and anthropogenic impact on birds (changes in population status, vulnerability, adaptations, microevolution). The laboratory maintains close scientific relations with scientific research centres of foreign countries, conducts contractual scientific research projects commissioned by various international and national organizations and foundations, fulfils applied scientific research projects and offers experimental development services to various branches of economy and organizations.

The Laboratory of Ornithology, established in 1973, was renamed the Laboratory of Avian Ecology in 1999. Currently it is headed by Corresp. Member of the Lithuanian Ac. of Sci. Dr Habil. M.Žalakevičius (since 1984) who was preceded in this position by Dr Habil. M.Valius and V.Skuodis. At present the staff of the laboratory numbers 12 employees.

During its lifetime the laboratory has been exploring diverse research themes: adaptation of birds in a cultural landscape, problems of domestication and synantropization, investigations and theory of seasonal bird migrations, migration regularities and mechanisms of their control, problems of aviational ornithology, regularities and mechanisms of habitat selection by birds, anthropogenic impact, formation regularities of bird migrational accumulations and wintering grounds, mechanisms of their management, significance of climatic parameters and global climate change impact on various bird life processes, investigations of the ratio between anthropogenic activities and global change in their integrated impact on animate nature, scientific fundamentals and strategy of bird protection.

During the years of the laboratory existence three of its researchers maintained Habilitation theses and 14 employees – Doctoral theses. The cycle of research works ‘Mechanisms of Bird Migration Control’ by M.Žalakevičius won Lithuanian Science Award of 1996.
